Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, which are the seeds of berries from the Coffea plant; so coffee beans aren’t beans they are berry fruit pits. This means as I traverse the coffee shops around Ireland meeting candidates, clients, and other interesting people, I’m contributing to my five a day. In fact, more often than not I’m well exceeding it! It’s a real perk (no pun intended) to be able to marry two of my passions, career consulting and coffee and it be part of my ‘job’, however at times it can be difficult for candidates and clients to strike the right note in terms of location for meetings. To help in presenting a solution here is my guide to great ‘business meeting’ places that also deliver phenomenal coffee in Cork City.
The word coffee comes from the Arabic for ‘wine of bean’ and even though Idaho delivers great coffee one can also enjoy fresh, delicious breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and some really exceptional wine. When meeting clients it delivers on all fronts and can easily adapt to any meeting type. It is an intimate space with many nooks and crannies. If you were looking for a discreet location to engage with a candidate, because of its popularity I would probably advise caution however if you want to impress a client, show off Corks artisan, independent food/coffee culture, engage Richard and Mairead in a conversation about the importance of local business and enjoy a personal ‘made with love’ smooth tasting coffee. Cork Coffee Roasters
In the Ottoman Empire drinking coffee was punishable by death. Well I’d be one dead duck by now if this was the case in Cork today! Cork Coffee Roasters is an institution in the City. I actually resemble the angry bear motive that appears on the cups in the mornings before I get my caffeine hit. If you are looking for a chat with a candidate in a casual environment and are in the mood for an efficient, expertly roasted high quality cup of coffee then CCC boasts two great city locations where you can really get listening to your candidate’s needs. I frequent the Bridge Street location often as it’s in close proximity to Oliver Mall’s HQ but when I’m around town; the French Church street shop is a great meeting place and has a very private table towards the back. @cork_coffee is located at 2 Bridge Street and 2 French Church Street
In 1683, one pound of coffee in New York was worth as much as 4 acres of land. 130 years later The Imperial Hotel opened its doors becoming one of the oldest properties in Cork City. I wonder how much coffee it would have taken to buy the plot of land at its South Mall location that year. La Fayette Cafe, downstairs on your right as you enter the hotel, boasts some really impressive surrounding to take a meeting. Both Candidates and Clients alike can be comfortable here with a lot of morning, lunch and evening meetings taking place. With large marble pillars, ornate ceilings and an efficient staff the coffee in LaFayette is strong, full bodied and can last a long meeting. The Imperial is on Cork’s main business thoroughfare and so if you’re looking for something less public, the bar across the entrance hall, 76, has a fantastic mezzanine level. @ImperialCork is at 76 South Mall
Cappuccino’ takes its name from the Capuchin friars: the color of the espresso mixed with frothed milk was similar to the color of the Capuchin robe. The Capuchin friars are members of the larger Franciscan orders of monks, and their order was founded in the 16th century in Italy. Confession: I really like Italian coffee! Italee in the morning is like any coffee shop in Rome. Early, before some of the city wakes you can go there and witness the Italian community of Cork, standing up at the ‘bar’ and engaging with each other over an espresso. For later in the day, there is ample seating upstairs and it’s a great place for a meeting. The staff delivers to the table and the choice of coffee is complimented by simple pasta dishes made in front of your eyes in their open kitchen. It’s the most authentic Italian experience I’ve had…outside of Italy! The Coffee is strong and Italian and made with precision by the barista, who also services and maintains the imported coffee machines. On Oliver Plunket Street, @italeecafe delivers on all fronts.
Harley’s Coffee House
Caffeine is on the International Olympic Committee list of prohibited substances. Athletes who test positive for more than 12 micrograms of caffeine per milliliter may be banned from the Olympic Games. This level may be reached after drinking about 5 cups of coffee. Ouch! Any coffee athletics out there? The owner of Harley’s Coffee House, John, who opened around the same time as Oliver Mall is one of the fittest guys I know. He’s a marathon runner and says things like: ‘I JUST ran a half marathon over the weekend’ and ‘I was up at 5.30 this morning for a little jog’…now I can see why he’s so successful in his races! John is perfectionists who will deliver bespoke coffee made to order. He wouldn’t last a min in one of the corporate coffee shops where speed and volume of sale is priority and he would say that himself. He is a passionate Cork man committed to offering quality and integrity to the city one excellent cup of coffee at a time. Off the beaten track with lots of seats, this is a perfect place to have an in-depth chat in private, complimented by a superior beverage while contributing to a new business in the city. @HarleysCoffee is located at 11 MacCurtin Street
Originally coffee was eaten, some African tribes would mix coffee berries with fat to create energy balls! We all approach things differently but universally we all strive for similar results. For most of us work is a big part of our existence and can define us in certain ways. To ensure your career is working at its maximum for you, sometimes we need to asses our situation and perhaps change it. That may mean a shift in career path; it may mean a change in company, a new title or a better remuneration package. Either way having a robust discussion with a trusted consultant that represents a respected human capital consultancy like Oliver Mall can arm you with the information, tools or opportunity that you may desire. If you are thinking about ensuring your career is maximising its potential for you, I would be delighted to have a consultation. At Oliver Mall Understanding Your Ambition starts with Listening to Your Journey.
