To change or not change, that is the question!

To change or not change, that is the question!

To change or not change, that is the question!

Have you ever wondered, what if it was time to shift my career goals?

Is where I am currently working, working for me?

If I were to consider my options, what are they, exactly?

How do you start this type of journey?

These questions and a few hundred more have run through my mind many times and I must tell you and if there’s one thing that really matters it’s this – It is never too late to change!

Having spent over 20 years in the Banking Industry, I had acquired a lot of transferable and useful skills. I forged different roles in my banking career but still felt I was always going to be considered as someone who could only ever have a Banking career, nothing beyond that.

I embraced every training course available to me and applied my learnings to my everyday role and more however I felt I could further use my wider skill set outside of Banking.

Having made the choice to leave the industry upon availing of an opportunity in June 2015, my head was full of new ideas as to which road I would take and what I would like to do.

I spent the first six months of traveling and making exciting plans.

But sometimes plans don’t work out quite how you want them to – disaster struck in my personal life and I spent the next two years looking after my mum.

In September 2017, I made the decision to go back into the world to see what I could do with all the knowledge and skill set I had acquired in my career.

I started the job search and it was an eye-opener for me.  Plenty of rejections, non-replies, ‘not a suitable candidate’ type feedback… The search was proving to be more difficult than I had anticipated and at times, disheartening.

My solution = Sassitude!  Plenty of sass with the right attitude can go a long way.

I meet with Laura and Sarah in Oliver Mall in November – It was an informal chat – Little did I know then that meeting would be the start of a new career.

I met with Fionnán in December – another lengthy chat and some number of coffees – I became Sheila the Recruitment Consultant.

It’s been an exciting, frightening and invigorating journey so far.  Being unsure of yourself can be a great motivator to do well.

I have learned that it’s never too late to change what you want to do and I’m looking forward to where the next part of my recruitment Journey takes me!

In the wise words of Richard Branson, “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it – say yes – then learn how to do it later”.
